Malpractice Coverage/ Insurance

Malpractice  insurance  is  the one  that  covers  your  expenses, in case, a  patient  sues  you for  deviating from the  ethics  of  medicine.
This  a  very  rare  chance, especially  for  a  student, but  you  cant  practice  medicine in  USA  without this  insurance. Therefore, you have  to  have  this  insurance. All  the  institutions  will  ask  you  to  send a  copy  of your  malpractice  insurance.

  • Although www.proliability.com is considered to be the most wise option for malpractice insurance by simply following few easy steps as mentioned below. But now let me bring your attention to what their customer care center's representative told me.The Genuine Visiting Medical Student Insuranse by proliability.com is of 5000$. Have a look at the following series of emails by their staff
  • Our company can offer an annual policy for medical students for a premium of around $5,000. However, if you are working for a shorter time period than that, we do not have any coverage available. I would recommend contacting the school or hospital where you will be working to see if they can provide you with medical malpractice insurance.

  • 1. All of our student applications state that if you are going to any type medical school you are not eligible for this program. I am truly sorry but we have absolutely nothing available for medical students.
    Thank you,
    Vickie Tilden
    2. We realize that there are some students who are somehow slipping through the cracks and getting coverage, however if a claim were to happen; the policy would not cover the claim due to fact that they are truely"medical students", not medical assistant students which this policy is designed to cover. The curriculum you forwarded clearly states you are a medical student and unfortunately you are not eligible for coverage.
    Thank you,
    Vickie Tilden
    3. Medical assistants take classes to work in Dr.s offices performing administrative and clinical duties. The student program does not cover anyone who is taking this class as an elective towards there medical schooling. You are attending medical school, so you are ineligible for this program.
    Thank you,
    Vickie Tilden
    4. Proliability.com is part of our company, it is our location to apply for coverage on-line, but as I stated previously, we can not offer coverage to medical students.
    Thank you,
    Vickie Tilden
    5. Thank you for your inquiry regarding professional liability insurance. Unfortunately, our student program does not cover medical students, so at this time we do not have any insurance to offer you as a medical student.

    6. Thank you for your email.
As you are not studying at a university in either the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Hong Kong, West Indies, New Zealand, Singapore or Malaysia, MPS are unable to provide you with indemnity for your elective in the US.
I would recommend contacting your university or elective institution for advice on who can provide you with insurance.
I am sorry MPS have been unable to help you on this occasion.
I hope this answers your questions.
    Yours sincerely

Following is the email from one of our seniors when I asked him to help us in this matter
'All of my class-fellows and I got insurances from this same website and interestingly we were not aware of the difference between medical student and medical assistant student. We sent the printed certificate of insurance and it worked with all the universities. None of us needed a claim and I have never heard of any claims from any seniors.'
In case you are still interested in getting insured as "medical assistant" there are many insurance companies that offer this online insurance like www.proliability.com and Marsh Insurance e.g hpso.com.
For proliability.com, following guideline may be helpful to you.
You  can have  this insurance  done  from   the  website  of  professional liability, that  is  www.proliability.com
You need to have following things before  applying for insurance on this website.
A valid USA address and Phone number
A valid Credit/Debit card number,  card type,  card owners complete name as on the card and  date  of  expiry of card.
(All this information is usually present on the card itself)
Once you are on the site, follow these steps:
Select your profession as STUDENT and press continue.
Then from step 1, select STUDENT (NON PHYSICIAN) and from step 2 select NO ASSOCIATION/ASSOCIATION NOT LISTED. Then press, Instant Quote.
In the next step, they ask for start of insurance date. You  will  have  to  enter  any  date  valid  within  next  45  days. Remember, your   proliability insurance  will  be for one  year, so  you  should  plan  your  elective  dates  in a  way  that  they  will  be  covered  by  this insurance.
Then, enter any source of information about this site, you can  say friends/family.
Then, enter your practice type as  student.
For state of practice, you can mention any state where you are  applying for  electives.
Last one is optional, and you dont need to fill it.
In the next step, again you will have to select your profession. Select STUDENT MEDICAL ASSISSTANT. (remember: you are not being insured as medical student and this insurance is of no use if you are going for electives as a visiting medical student)
Then, select type of  coverage. You can select the  one  with  35  dollars  or  the  one  with  41  dollars which has  better coverage. Its  better  to  select  the  one  with  41  dollars, as some universities want  you to have more  coverage.
In the next page, fill out the  whole  form. The important  things  here  are:
A valid day time phone  number which  is  to be  entered  without  USA code no. and  without spaces or  dashes  inside  the phone  number.
Then comes the address, which  is  most  important. This  should  be a valid  address  and  you  must  know  that the  insurance  company  will  send  your  confirmatory  documents  to  this  mailing  address. So, there  should be  some one on this  address who can  send  you  these  documents  if required.  Its  better  not to enter  the  address  of someone  in a  university/college or a hospital.
Then enter the name of  college  where  you are  applying  for  electives. It should be in the state  which  you mentioned  as  the  state of practice.
Then, you will  have  to  select   YES  in the  box  saying  that  you  are  attending  an  American College, otherwise they wont give you  insurance.(note you are insured as an American 'medical assistant' student, not Foreign Medical student)
Then comes next page. Fill in the  credit card information. For  billing  address, click  on  YES  for  address  being  the  same  as  the  one  you  gave  earlier.
In  the  end, don't  forget  to  take  out  the  print outs of MEMORANDUM OF INSURANCE. Because, it will be  the  memorandum  whose  copies  you  will be  sending along with  elective  application.
Many people use  this  insurance  for  all  elective  applications(whereas its a fake one) in all states of USA, because on  the  memorandum  they  don't  mention  the  state  of  practice  or  the institution  attending. For the USA address, you  must  have  someone on that  address  who  can help  you timely. So, enter a valid address.
If u are not ready to buy a fake insurance then the question arises what to do! I contacted more than 50 insurance companies including all those mentioned and only about few of them offer genuine malpractice insurance for medical students, have a look at few replies that might be of some use!
    1. Thank you for your inquiry.  Yes, we can provide you with the malpractice insurance you will need.  Cost may be affected by the location of the medical center where you train, but we can give you some indication, or range.  As it happens, our offices will be closed for a long holiday weekend.  Someone will email you next week.

    5. Thank you for your inquiry for Student Malpractice Insurance. We can usually provide the required coverage of most U.S. Hospitals ($1,000,000. Each occurrence and $3,000,000. Annual aggregate).  The policy is a CLAIMS MADE form of Insurance and is written on a one year basis from the date of the students first rotation at a U.S. Hospital that requires these limits. There is no pro ration of the policy premium. The policy is only issued for a one year term only. (No short term policies are written)  This means that the premium is the same for any period of time needed up to one year.  Thus the premium is fully earned once the policy is ordered. Currently the premium has been quoted at approximately $1200. It is important to let me know in advance in what states you will apply for your rotation so that I may confirm that the insurance can be purchased in that state. I am attaching the instructions and required application for your review.  I strongly urge you to begin the process of obtaining the insurance between 45 to 60 days before you will need the policy. It serves no purpose to make application in advance of 60 days, as the quote will not be firm. Please email me any questions you may have. I look forward to working with you.
                                                                    IMPORTANT
If you are a post medical school graduate, the insurance company will need a detailed statement from you explaining what your professional activities have been since graduation and what activities you will perform while at the insured rotation.
Upon receipt of your application, I can give you a letter stating we will be able to place your insurance at the time your clerkship begins.
Since it would be unwise to buy a policy before you are accepted to a medical clerkship. When you send me an application with it completed as best you know now, I will send you the letter I describe above to help you get your acceptance. That would be the best any one can do since we cannot sell you a policy without the name and dates of the rotation.
    Very truly yours,

The insurance company will not sell you a policy until there is a hospital that has accepted you with the dates of the rotation provided.
I can send you a letter to whom it may concern that will assist you. The attached is a sample of the letter.
I will need to know where you are applying as we cannot provide a policy in all states.

Hello, here is some information regarding the program that we have to offer.  Coverage is offered through Evanston Insurance on a Claims Made Basis (which covers claims first made, reported or filed during the year the policy is in force for any incidents that occur during your elective).  The cost of the program is $1,250 premium plus applicable surplus lines taxes and fee, it provides a $1,000,000/$3,000,000 limits of liability with a $0 deductible, and a 100% minimum earned premium.
In order to obtain a quotation we must have the attached application completed along with a current resume/cv.  Once we have reviewed your application and resume we will provide a formal quotation.  We can not bind coverage until the start date of your elective is confirm along with full payment.  (Other students have used the quotation with their applications)
If you complete the application question #1 needs to indicate a US address of where you will be living while doing your elective. Question #7 should be answered yes as the hospital that you will be training in; should be in compliance.  You should ask your coordinator for the name. This is a regulation that every healthcare institute must follow which pertain to the privacy of an individual.
Please note that coverage is a one year policy.  The company does not offer short term policies, however you are able to add any additional electives that you may choose to attend within the policy period as long as you advise us prior to the start date of the new electives we can add to the policy at no additional premium in the first year.

  • Updates to clear out Confusion new

Submitted by vaibhav on Thu, 11/05/2009 - 00:21.

Friends.. this is the procedure at this company for MPI
     Academicins procedure -
    1. You mail Steve saying you need a MPI for a certain period.
    2. He mails u back a student form in which u have to fill in details.
     - here u mention all the colleges you are going to apply.
    3. This is processed and a quotation is sent for the period u demand an MPI.
note- the quotation is based on the no. of months and has nothing to do with the no. of colleges.
    ( i got a quotation of  $ 523 for 3 months).
    4. Then if u accept this quotation u mail steve stating that u accept.
    5. Then when u accept this quotation the documents are sent.
    - one is the letter which will state that u will be covered for MPI when accepted.it is a general letter so it can be presented to any college u apply.
    - second is the agreement between you and the company. u hae to sign and return this to the company.
-third is the payment u have to make
note- the payment has to be made before hand. i enquired in detail. if in case u r not selected for the electives the money will be refunded fully.
So this is the procedure . It takes minimun of  6 days and a max of 20 days to get all this done.Depends on the processing.
I hope this clears everything about this MPI.( Andy hope this helps)
    All the best friends...
God bless Umar bhai, Medisid, Purav

 Hello Umar,

I am confused about purchasing malpractice insurance. Is proliability ok? I am afraid, they may reject my application if they came to know its not genuine insurance. Other companies ask lotta formalities. So what should I do? Which one do you prefer?

Ravinder

well ravinder, proliability is a fake insurance for visiting medical students... it is for medical assistants... and if u use it, it is illegal but still many people use it, though I don't recommend it...tc and best of luck!

i'd maild janet williams abt the interest for malprac insurance academicins could offer if i apply to multiple places for electives...

i'd askd her whether they would give me a letter stating - "if and when this person is accepted for  an elective at xyz universities, he would be covered with malprac insuranceby us'

however der was no clear cut reply frm her... she insisted on giving the names of all places where i intended 2 apply..

So i wantd 2 ask umarbhai n anybody else who knows dis.. DO V GET A LETTER FRM ACADEMICINS AS ABOVE AT THE

TIME OF APPLICATION TO A UNIVERSITY??? - cuz evry university requires one b4hand!

PLZ HELP!! God bless umarbhai!

Hey Andy.. The procedure is simple.. I guess they have sent u a student application form. There u have to fill all the fields u know. and under university just mention the names of all the colleges u are goin to apply and mention in bracket that u are planning to apply to all these universities . now they wont give u a malpractice insurance true copy but.. they will  give u a letter stating that u will be covered.. this letter u will have to send in with ur applications...which is sufficient for ur application.

And one more thing try mailing Steve not Janet... Janet does not respond properly n is slow in responding.. Steve is her boss and he is prompt.

Hope this solves ur problem.

God bless Umar bhai...

Thanks mate!!! dat was helpful..

Btw, which univs r u applyin 2???

  Ur welcome always dude...

i am applying for cornell, northwestern, yale, tufts, harard, nih, maimonidies, suny, ucsd,n tht cancer centre

Oh gr8! hope u get in2 d best choices dat u wud prefer!

lookin forward as always 2 ur, umarbhai's n medisid's guidance..!

god bless!

Hi andy and others.

What I used was LLLefton one. The letter stating that they'll be able to provide with malpark insurance once I am selected at the medical school. I paid 25$ for it thru draft(costing 625 INRs  more). If selected then i'll have to buy that MPI for 1 yr costing 1200$. When I saw that letter, I was aghast! It was merely a word format letter with LLL & Co and its fax # written as the header on the word format file, containing that they'll be ready to place me Mr *Medisid* with malprak Ins once he is approved to rotate at your program and blah blah! It didnt look official to me so iasked them to send me with on official letterpad. They replied saying that this one has worked by past students in past and they have never got a complaint!

I used this letter at harvard and the application was accepted, though the rotation rejected! If you want I can email you that word file or if Umar bhai considers it legitimate, I can upload it here. You all just change my name to yours and use it. Oncde you get selected, buy from academicins. (thats what i am doing for NIH!).

@vaibhav .....'that cancer one' *funny nomenclature*

Best Wishes.

Can any1 help me where do i find OSHA? i need it for Tufts, Harvard application.. my college does not proide it.. they dont even know what OSHA is.. :(

thank u

dude... i found this site oshatrain.org  which provides various courses

the course training is free but u have to spend sum amount for the certificate ..($18 for mailing original and $8 for pdf format thru email).. i think the Basic Safety Management Course would do (Course 700)... However u plz confirm with the co-ordinators if this wud suffice!...

Hope it helps!

All d best!

alternatively.. there's this indian site called safety-world.net which offers courses in India.. dey have 10hr and 30hr osha courses but i think they aren't online... u have to visit the centres specified.. n no details abt cost n all on the website..

however they have given contact numbers on which u cud try..

all d best!

u'r always welcome pal!

n do lemme know what happens abt d OSHA thing.. Sooner or later evn 'm gonna b in d same boat as urs!!!

God bless umar bhai!

hey medisid !

gr8 idea dat u'v givn... thnx!

u can mail dat format 2 me at my address...

rockandy9@yahoo.co.in

God bless!

hey medisid hi!...

uthnx for the lefton letter dat u maild me... but i hav a small doubt..

suppose i submit that letter during application..and i get acceptance..  obviously when i reach US, they'll ask me to produce true copy of the insurance (which i'll buy frm academicins).. so now i hav the coverage assurance letter frm lefton and actual copy frm academicins... wont dat create a problem????

How are u going abt it???

hello there!

personally i think it wont matter as long as you provide them 1million/3million insurance coverage during your rotations. be it from any company, but it shud be genuine and in effect at the time of your rotations. There are many excuses you cud give them as to changing the company i.e. i bailed out of that company, coz of bad experience with my friend, bad service to me during applying to electives, there is some problem/delay in paperwork with that company(LLL) so i changed to this company for this elective to save time. let your imagination run! also we are so much expert at making excuses n bahanaas.

I just used it for harvard, rest of the places i applied weren t asking for MPI during the applying like weill, mskcc, rochester, yale. so ididnt use it. i preferred it because i wasnt knowing where i will get selcted and whether the 500$ that steve asks for 6 months may be utilized or not.It upto you to weigh down the risks and costs and go for MPI as per your preference.

Best Wishes.

hey medisid! hi...

thanx for the detaild explanation...

u'r just 2 brilliant man! how many weeks are u planning to do ur electives in US?

n apart frm nih, hav u got acceptance elsewher??

hello dr andy!

Thnx for ur kind words, as i told b4 its just give & take or a better word 'pass it on' to disseminate info n help everybody as somebody must have did to u in the past!!! and u never know, this 'pass it on' mentality may reach u in future thru anybody and help u again!

Personally i wish for a minimum of 12 weeks of clinical electives and if possible some 8-9 weeks research electives at JHUSOM! right now i have nih n rads at NW in hand. But NO VISA!1 . have my intervu soon in a week. Just Pray that i get thru it with flying colors!!!! will post the detailed info abt visa hassles after that!

Best Wishes n 'Pass it On'

hey medisid! wish u al d best for the interview!!! m sure u gonna rock der 2!!

n hope u get acceotances frm all d places so dat u r spoilt for choice!

tc.....

Thanks a lot andy for your wishes! I do need them as much as i can carry!

Best Wishes to you too in your endeavours!

Medisid Ive been looking for malpractice insurance and they are really expensive, and for the electives that Im applying only one asks for a MPI by the time of the application. So I saw your post and saw it interesting. Can you please send me the letter? My email is ma_cristina_n@hotmail.com. Do you think it will have no problem?

Thank You, Maria Cristina

HeLoo

Medisid,

I'm applying to Thomas Jefferson for the month of May....Can you please email it to hassaan_habib@hotmail.com

Thanks

Hassaan

'm in a fix regarding this malprac thing..

i wish to apply 2 d followin places most probably :

NIH, Jefferson, Rochester, UCSD, MSKCC, LIJMC, Connecticut, Maimonedes for electives..

Though 'm applyin to 8 places, i will be allowed maximum for a period of 2 months by my school.

So how wud the academicins ppl temme d quotation? Does d amount vary wid no. of places dat i apply or does it depend on the no. of months i intend to do the electives??

bhai, medisid, purav, vaibhav...any who knows plz help! (n of course medisid i hav ur idea in mind, but i want dis jus to get a quotation frm academicins)

Dear andy!

NIH, Rochester & MSKCC do not need MPI at the time of application. You can provide to them after acceptance. Others i dont have idea. But if you are going 4 academicins. better list all of them now coz then they will cover you if u get acceptance at the above places. Maybe if u dont list them now, they will ask for more $$$ when u want cover for these places on acceptance

I feel(NOT SURE), it depends on the # of months. for 2 months i feel it wud be around 200-300$. not sure again!!!!

Best wishes

Hey Andy i will update the malpractice page... just check it... ok .. that will clear all ur doubts... n hope the OSHA thing helped..

All the best..

dude.... thnx a ton for detaild explanation abt malprac thng as well as the OSHA...really grateful 2 u man!! thnx a lot

btw, u dun wid d applications 2 all places i hope!! wish ya all d best!!

note- the payment has to be made before hand. i enquired in detail. if in case u r not selected for the electives the money will be refunded fully.

So this is the procedure . It takes minimun of  6 days and a max of 20 days to get all this done.Depends on the processing.

I hope this clears everything about this MPI.( Andy hope this helps)

All the best friends...

God bless Umar bhai, Medisid, Purav

hey what to write in column for General description of clinical activities in malpractice insurance form? when i asked programme co ordinator she said i would be  doing all the clinical activities similar to a 4th year medical student...

any suggestion?

guys plz help regarding this seemingly stupid prob... but i'v no idea how its done

i have a bank account in india...obviously in rupees.. now how do i send a US check in dollars (for app fee etc.) from here? Also whats d mode of payment of malprac insu (for eg to academicins n all.)?? i dun hav credit card..

Also which international cards available in India wud help ,ake such online transactions easier??

Plz help guys!!

Hey Andy

Getting the drafts made in dollars is really easy. If you have an account in an indian here then just tell them that you need a draft in dollars (the amount you need) which is payable in the states. I got my drafts made from HDFC bank. They were very quick, used to make my drafts within a few hours and dont need a lot of documentation . The cost was 200 rs per drafts made which way cheaper then the 625 taken by sbi. Just check with other banks also if you have any account in them. All these banks have affiliation with American banks like HDFC has an affiliation with JP Morgan Chase.  So just inquire once. This is how I mailed my application fees. And i guess you can do the same for your malpractice payment also

Sincerely,

-Purav

sory guys i kno d questn is deviatin frm USMLE n Electives to Banking but cant help it!

Andy i already had a prexisting account in HDFC. I dont know wether u can get drafts made from hdfc when u hv account in sbi. Also surprisingly hdfc ppl didnt ask for any documentation. I just had to fill out a form and i was done

The solution is very simple... go to any branch of SBI which has foreign exchange department.. tell them u need a draft in dollars.. they will give u some forms.. u fill them.. they will take money from u in indian rupees n will issue an draft in dollars in the name of the university u want.. this draft is used for everythin.. application fees , mpi etc.. Hope tht helps... God bless u...

Yeah!

As vaibhav told, u shud do.

I heard somewhere that 'thomas cook' also issues drafts at a service charge of only 125-200Rs. It seems a cheaper option than SBI main branch(int'nl banking division/NRI division) which charges 625 Rs service charge for each draft made.

hope it helps. best wishes

hi , i m yet to get an approval for electives fro my dean . i have written toefl yesterday , did well ... now i m keeping everything ready .

when shall i aply for malpractice - before talking to dean and getting applications signed    or   is it safer and ok if i apply for malpractice  after i get approval from dean , i m gonna appplly for feb , march ,

will i lose money if i dont get acceptance from dean

suppose i get deans approval on 20 th july , is it ok if i apply and send the applications on 20 th august ,because i have to wait for the malpractise copy which i will apply on 21 th july

that time gap on the applications dates will matter or it is not a problem ...

suppose i aplly for 1 month malpractise now itself before asking dean again ,

i heard we get the refund for malpractise . is it only if the university rejects  .

or they refund even if we personally are not able to complete the application process because of dean not sending us for electives?

i m going to apply for 1 month of electives . my choice of electives slots will be over 3 months jan , feb , march .

so , for malpractise can i apply for just 1 month for example January , and suppose i get accepted for february , can i shift the insurance from jan to feb  ,,,

unnecessarily i need not apply for 3 months just because i dont know which i ll be accepted among jan -feb-march , which i am going to apply .

will the univ see the month covered on the malpractise copy , and since it is 1 month , they will give slot only for the month of january which i put on the copy of insurance

will they know that malpractise is transferable , and hence give any month , not just the month on the malpractise copy .

there are a few things u can do:

1-easiest and safest but costly:

by insurance for all three months: e-g if ya get accepted in feb u can refund for jan and march.

the refund is usually 100% for that month, make dat clear with the company b4 ya do dat

2- u can talk to the insurance company to issue u a letter that insurance will be provided for the month of elective, if they agree.

3- you can talk to the insurance company and make sure if they will allow transfer, and then explain that to the elective coordinator.

all above scenarios are possible !

elective coordinators are usually not aware of such minute details. and personaly i think insurance's importance is just a mere legal documentation, never will a situation arise when ull b needing it, Its only a waste, try savin on it as much as ya can.

ur money prolly just goes to a trash can  or in the company's pocket. no institute realises that. Some do and they offer their's free of cost, coz dey realise dere's hardly anything that a student can do wrong to harm a patient considering the nature of tasks they do. e-g Mayo clinic, Northwestern

Hi,

Firstly, great information on dis page.

I am hoping to apply at The Cleveland Clinic for an elective.

Can you plz tell me if it is possible to get some documentation from a company stating that
I would be provided malpractice insurance once I am accepted by the
medical school for the elective program, as this would allow me to buy

the malpractice coverage after getting accepted at the medical school and so save time and effort to get a refund?

And approx how much does a 1 month coverage cost?

Thnx.

SALAM UMAR BHAI

Umar bhai i am hoping to apply for elective in McGill University.Umar bhai on McGill university website thy stated that McGill donot provide any malpractice insurance students should buy themselves but bhai i mailed to the elective coordinator of McGill to ask about any organization who can provide malpractice insurance for canada but his reply was  McGill University does not offer liability insurance and we do not know any company or website that will offer this service.  Policy restrictions state that you can apply without insurance at any 5 of the MUHC sites (Montreal General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal Children’s Hospital, Montreal Chest Institute and Montreal Neurological Hospital), Jewish General Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital because their policy will cover. Please tell me what i should do i should apply without malpractice insurance or i should buy.

Hi Umar Bhai,

thanks a million for this website.

There is something i wished to ask. Peter Leone of the Academicins group has already sent me the invoices, the letter of coverage and Agreement documents.

Someone told me that I don't really have to purchase the insurance now. I may just use that letter of coverage for the purpose of applying to colleges, then buy the insurance later when I get selected for the electives.

Is it ok if I do that? Would they take my application seriously the next time I apply to them for coverage? I wouldn't be unethical in doing such a thing, would I?

Waiting for your reply. Thanking you.

Sam

Hi Umar and everyone out there who are doing such a great job here! U are all a boon to us! Thank you!

I am final year medical student in Nepal. I wanted to know if any of us here has done elective at University of Illinios, College of Medicine at Chocago. They have mentioned that for health and malpractice insurance, I can prepare a letter from the Dean of my medical school.

1. My medical school did provide me with insurance of NRS. 50,000 at the time of admission. I still need to confirm whether the money was for health insurance or something else. The problem is that the Dean has been recently changed and he is very un-cooperative when he is asked a favour. So I do not know how to prepare a letter that I have health insurance in my medical school and that when at UIC I will be covered.

2. There is no provision of malpractice insurance in Nepal as I have heard of, at least for undergraduates. I recently passed my medical council exams. Does the medical council provide such kind of malpractice insurance? I do not even know whom to ask. UIC also mentions that I can have a letter prepared from the Dean indicating liability of not less than 1 million/episode and 3 million/year. As mentioned aforehand, my Dean is not co-operative in this matter. Is it dangerous to prepare such a letter from the Dean even is there is no provision of malpractice insurance for undergraduates in my medical school?

3. If I have to pay for health insurance+malpractice insurance for two months+visa +accomodation+airfares, then it is going to be very difficult for me, thus I am trying to cut off on health insurance/malpractice insurance. Is there any way I ca find sponsors for my elective? I searched for sponsors but most of them are for US students who want to come to developing countries for electives and not vice-versa.

Please can anyone help me? Suggest me?!

Many thanks

RS

Thanks for your kind words...

1. I dont think you have a Health Insurance from your college; better confirm it... you can get a travel insurance from your country!

2. You buy the malpractice insurance from US companies!

3. Contact your alumni; I am not sure about it!

I will take an elective in Texas (1 month)

and academicins.com wants to charge me $250 fro this 1 minth elective

I think it is too much

Can I just go with proliability.com $35 ? or this is fake and may cause my elective to be cancelled ?

Hello there, Iam in my final yr mbbs in a private college in Karachi & I am applying to Univ of California, San Diego for an elective for Jan- keeping my affordabilty options in mind, there were hardly any other institutes available at my disposal. Anywho, So I will apply on 2nd July 2013- but they require proof of MPI coverage- now I have emailed the AcademicIns people, awaiting their reply. If I apply on basis of their coverage letter and buy insurance before my elective starts, would that suffice? Or do I have to buy insurance before hand to applying ? Does anyone have any idea how much 1 month insurance by AcademicIns costs? I hope I will be guided. Also if anyone knows any other cost effective institutes that will give me elective without Step 1 for the month of jan, then please help me out !! And thank you to all the admins for this web portal- great help this is ! Awaiting reply. Regards, Misbah.
